Belvoir Estate Sale 1920

Many of the properties in the parish, including farms, fully licensed inn, cottages and pastures were sold on Wednesday 3 March 1920 at an auction on behalf of the Belvoir Estate. Lot 3, 'The Boot and Shoe Inn'  was tenanted by Mrs Elizabeth Skinner and sold to Ind Coop for £1,450. Pulling pints until 2015, The Boot and Shoe has closed its doors to the public and is now a private residence.

Lot 17 now 'Old Orchard' (latterley known as 'Payling Cottage') to the left and 'Willow Cottage' to the right, was tenanted by Mr William Watson and Mr William Birkett before being bought by Mr Grummitt of Ropsley for £540. One of the oldest properties in the village and shown on the Enclosure Act map of 1793, it was originally on Ward Lane since renamed Green Lane. In 1910 this was one cottage tenanted by John Hoyte a tailor and farmer. Up to 3 cows were kept on the land to the rear (since built on with additional properties along Old Forge Lane to Keyworth farm). Feast roundabouts would be put here or in the paddock at the Boot and Shoe. The property was sub-divided some time between 1920 and 1935. Although the external appearance of the house has changed with extensions to both ends and the rear, the original wooden beams, lintel fireplace and some historic features remain.​
