Welcome to the Advent Calendar PageAlthough we are now into 2021 and still in the grip of COVID 19 restrictions, this page remains available to view by popular demand and to inspire parishoners to take part in future events. A short video capturing some of the 2020 festive lighting and calendar windows in the parish has been published online here by David Powell.

Living Advent Calendar Hints and TipsFirstly, do whatever you want and have fun with it! Your design could be traditional, humorous, topical or a winter scene.
Materials You will need transparent, semi transparent and opaque paper such as tissue paper, thin craft paper, acetate, cellophane or crepe paper. Last year we found that tissue paper worked best. Opaque dark sugar paper is useful for stained glass effects or to make figures/trees etc. stand out. Tape, glue, scissors and that’s about it –oh, and a good light source behind. Your normal room light may be sufficient but you will need to experiment and add a table or reading lamp if your design is not showing up well in the dark. Good sources of materials are Hobbycraft and The Range on the Meadow Lane retail park just down from Lady Bay Bridge. The Range is much cheaper but Hobbycraft sells larger sheets of paper. Alternatively, online sites such as Amazon are convenient and may be cheaper. Construction and Display You may wish to measure your window (upstairs or down) and assemble your scene on a table or floor or you may find it easier to construct it directly on the window. Construction away from the window will mean less glue or tape on the glass. With regard to illumination, 5.00pm until around 10.00pm would seem reasonable but you can illuminate for longer if you wish. Many participants used timers last year to illuminate from 5.00pm. Please display your calendar date card in the window and remember to keep your design top secret until your date arrives! We plan to leave the windows up until January 2nd so that, even if you draw the last date, your window will be up for at least a week. If you are going to be away at any point in Advent, consider the use of a timer on your light source, someone to switch on for you, or request a date after your return.
